The third and final stop on this trip was Florence, Italy. I think it was unanimous that this was everyone’s favorite stop. We didn’t know until we landed, but we were arrived on the weekend of the Festa San Giovanni which is the festival for the patron saint of Florence, Saint John. Included in the festival was the Calcio Storico which is a historic football match that pits teams from all four of Florence’s districts – San Giovanni, Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, and Santa Maria Novella – in a soccer match in Renaissance costume.
I was expecting to have mostly pasta dishes as the primary food while we were in Florence, however there was plenty of red meat and fish available. I managed to mostly end up eating some of the best steaks I’ve ever had while we were there. I also managed to develop a taste for the red wine (imagine that.)
