I know, every time I put up a new gallery I start it off by saying something about how we checked off another bucket list trip, blah, blah, blah. While those statements aren’t any less true today than when I posted them, this year’s trip was truly a bucket list event. Eleven brave souls trusted yours truly to research, plan, and execute a multi thousand dollar trip to golf in Scotland.
I won’t get into what all went into the planning, but I did talk with several companies that are providers for trips like this and decided to work with Pioneer Golf located down the road a little ways from me in Austin. So, while I’d like to take credit for booking this trip for our group, Pioneer did the heavy lifting. They were fantastic to work with and literally took care of everything. We had no problems at all.
This trip was eight days with six rounds of golf booked. We ended up going toward the end of April. I had read that April was the driest month and prices are down a little bit. For our trip we had nearly no rain and perfect weather for most of the trip. The first golf day and last were the windiest and coolest but I’ve played in worse weather here in Texas. We stayed in St. Andrews for the first five nights of the trip at the Greyfriars Hotel. Everyone was very happy with the accommodations. It was within walking distance to everything we needed, had a fantastic pub downstairs with a super friendly staff.
While in St. Andrews we golfed at Carnoustie, Dumbarnie, St. Andrews Jubilee Course, St. Andrews Old Course (shout out to my caddie Darren who’s “Fore Right” yells still haunt my dreams), and Kingsbarns (shout out to our waitress, Diane (I think) the friendliest and funniest waitress ever). There were a few guys that managed to get in rounds at the St. Andrews New Course and Castle Course. Pioneer Golf was able to set us up with a private whisky tasting on one of the evenings in St. Andrews.
After St Andrews we shuttled over to North Berwick and played the North Berwick West Links Course. There we stayed at the Marine North Berwick Hotel. We had our coolest and windiest day while playing the West Links. I need to shout out the Bass Rock Bar at the Marine North Berwick Hotel. The Scotch Beef & Ale stew was one of the best things I ate on this trip.
I could probably write a lot more about this trip, but some of it wouldn’t be important to you or you would have had to been there to appreciate it. I could also review each course and try to tell you my favorite, but to be honest, they were all my favorite. I’ve tried to rank them in my head but it changes each day.
